Refining Services
Rand Refinery, one of the largest gold refineries in the world, currently refines 100% of the newly mined gold and silver in South Africa and 75% of all the gold mined in Africa.Rand Refinery continually invests in improving its technology to enhance the capabilities of its processes and this effort has paid off in improved operational efficiencies. This includes its ability to accept a wide range of materials and provide a low cost service.
Refining
Recent improvements include the installation of new furnaces in its evaluation unit to enhance its capability to accept gold and silver doré. A custom made glass-lined reactor has been installed in the refinery which allows it to continuously extract Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) in concentrate form during the gold refining process. The refinery, which provides a same day refining service, employs the widely used Miller Chlorination Process to upgrade the gold bullion it receives from mines to at least 99.50% fine gold, the minimum standard required for gold sold on the world bullion markets. It also employs the world’s leading silver refining technology. To further refine gold and silver to 99.99% the cost-effective once-through Wohlwill electrolytic refining process is used.
The refinery continually investigates refining technology developments that could make its operations more efficient and cost effective.
Fabrication
The Fabrication unit is part of Rand Refinery’s strategy of diversification of revenue streams by adding value to the gold leaving the site.Semi-finished products include casting granules, gold carated alloys, dental alloys, solder products, wire, sheet, coin blanks, bangle and ferrules.
The manufacture of cast bars of 1kg and less also forms part of the fabrication area. Krugerrand blanks are produced which are then minted by the SA Mint and distributed by Rand Refinery to its network of coin dealers.
